The most literal meaning of chamber music is "room music." Originally played or sung in small halls, parlors, and drawing rooms, chamber music is intimate -- almost like a private conversation. Two or more musicians perform, each playing an individual part, and there is no conductor.
Composers often wrote chamber music for friends or amateur musicians to play. As compositions grew more difficult, professional chamber music ensembles became more common. Chamber music ensembles include duos, string quartets, brass quintets, ensembles, and jazz and electronic groups. Small orchestras (about 35 players or less) are often referred to as chamber orchestras.
Much of the chamber music you hear at Krannert Center is still performed by friends and colleagues. The many faculty members of the School of Music team up with each other, and with other local musicians, to present wonderful chamber music concerts each year.
