The main stage for the Departments of Theatre and Dance, the Colwell Playhouse also hosts some touring productions. Its continental seating plan seats 674 people, and two small balconies accommodate wheelchairs. The proscenium stage measures 38 feet wide and 30 feet deep, with 3,990 square feet of backstage space. A computerized lighting system and two Zenon followspots are available, in addition to sound reinforcement and recording capability. The Playhouse has two large dressing rooms, and a green room area with vending machines.

The Foellinger Great Hall is named for Helene R. Foellinger, a 1932 graduate of the University of Illinois, a journalist who served on the United Press International (UPI) Advisory Board.
